The young man, who resides in this apartment, is a Yoga-Master and his main requirement was an open space for his daily exercises. In the first phase we designed his living room and incorporate the yoga-place right in the middle of the room. Furniture from family heritage as well as collectibles from various journey around the globe merged into a serene, meditative atmosphere, which he likes to call his Zen refuge.

In the second phase – his bedroom – he imagined a contemporary style, more sophisticated as he has experienced in Europe. The Indian furniture, which were already present in his house were converted into the new style and the new built lower shelves added to the straight and clear lines which are the main focus in this new bedroom. Soft brown tones and the right lightening for several moods add to the same serenity that is the continuum in this apartment.

In the living room a large space left empty for Yoga, despite the room does not look like a yoga-hall. Its a blended fusion of all the decorative items with the Indian inherited furniture.

Illuminating the niches creates a beautiful ambiance in the whole living room.

The paper-umbrella makes a beautiful lamp and the cranes painted on it represent longevity.

Beside the sofa is even space for a meditation corner.

The white Buddha brought from Thailand is the focal point of this room and adds to the meditative impression.

Two Indian bedsteads became a new comfortable realm for sound and secure sleep with a new upholstered bedhead in the same material as the overall bedspread. The big cushions in contrast colours not only set an accent to the predominant brown, they also provide a snuggly place for reading in the bed. The painted brown frame around the window has a continuance in the stripe on the right wall, which creates a frame round the bed even without the vertical stripes.

In the night the room embraces the inhabitant with coziness and security.

For his bedroom he imagined a brown wall-paint on the window wall, which we considered to mighty and the contrast between the light window and the dark wall would have be unproportional for that room. Instead, we agreed to a stripe, which brings the warmness of the brown colour, but does not overwhelm in its weight of one wall. This colour scheme continues in the curtains, bedspread and furniture.

Clear forms and straight lines reign the room. Here the contrast between the white wall and the dark brown furniture is purposely set.

One former kitchen-shelf has been transformed into a writing table with a pullout for the laptop (the other became the bar in the living room). According to Feng Shui the desk was placed into one of the auspicious direction of the owner, well considered that no sharp corner hits the bed.

This article was published by Homes in Harmony in PuneScoop.

In Feng Shui every person has 4 auspicious directions, called Success-, Health-, Romance- and Personal Development Direction. There are also 4 which are inauspicious and should be avoided. To find out about your best areas in your home or office you have to calculate your KUA number which is based on your date of birth. According to your personal KUA number, you can determine your 4 positive directions and 4 negative directions.

We will refer to the KUA number many times in the following Feng Shui articles. It is always good to know your number and your favourable directions, because sleeping, sitting or working in any of these specific locations will generally bring you luck and protect you from misfortune.

The Chinese lunar calendar differs from ours and starts with the Chinese New Year, which falls every year on a different date between 1st of Jan and the 20th of Feb. If you are born before Chinese New Year you have to calculate the KUA number from the year before, then refer to the Chinese Lunar Calendar at the end of the article to make sure that you are using the correct Chinese year of birth.

If your birthday lies after the 20th of February, then just go on with your calculation described below.

Now you can calculate your KUA number with this easy to follow step-by-step guide:

For Women:

-	Determine your Chinese year of birth

-	Add the last two digits of your year of birth to reduce to one digit

-	Add 5 to that number

- and this outcome is your personal KUA Number

-	1931 => 3 + 1 = 4 ; 4 + 5 = 9

-	A woman born in 1931 has KUA Number 9

-

For Men:

-	Determine your Chinese year of birth

-	Add the last two digits of your year of birth to reduce to one digit

-	Deduct from 10

- and this result is your personal KUA Number

-	1974 => 7 + 4 = 11 ; 1+1 = 2 ; 10 – 2 = 8

-	A man born in 1974 has KUA Number 8

According to your KUA number you can find out now your Auspicious Directions:

Note: number 5 is divided in m = male and f = female

Try as far as it is possible to sit facing your most Auspicious Direction: sit on your writing table facing your Success direction. Or sleep with your head towards that particular direction: sleep towards your Health direction, if you want to gain good health or towards your Romance direction, if you are looking for a partner or want to maintain a good marriage.

In case this is absolutely not possible, then at least try to apply one of your other three good directions. Avoid your Inauspicious Directions!

Note: number 5 is divided in m = male and f = female

The names of the Inauspicious Direction sound a bit unusual to our ears; these are the literally translations of the Chinese names. What is important to remember is that they increase in their wickedness from Mild Unluck to Total Loss.

In the next Feng Shui articles we will give more advices how to apply these Auspicious Directions into your daily (home and office) life to set up your environment for good luck, health and success.

Lot’s of good luck wishes you Karina S.V.

In Order to get your right Chinese birth year please refer to the chart below:

The only item on the terrace was an old rusty and squeaking swing. It was renovated, got a new roof and upholstery and has now a prominent place in the middle of the terrace, demarcating one side of the sitting area.

The sitting area consists of 3 divans which were upholstered with customized mattresses and backrests, the cushions make them even more comfortable. A low sitting area on the floor and a cane furniture set give ample space for big groups having parties here.

The most attractive place also on this terrace is the hammock. The plants on the parapet wall act as a screen from the neighbour jealous glances.

The grass-mats on the floor give a neat and clean appearance. The open space between the chatai walls and the ceiling serve well for a good cross ventilation.

The upholstery of the swing follows the beautiful design of the welding. Saris were draped across the ceiling following the colours of the directions according to Feng Shui.

The terrace was divided into two parts, one roofed and on open space. The open space is also accessible for the tenants to enjoy sitting outside and the roofed part is reserved for the owner and his family. Inside and outside the potted plants add to the cool and refreshing atmosphere.

The owner of that bungalow asks us to create a European style apartment to rent out to a single person or a couple. As he himself is convinced of Feng Shui, he obviously also want to provide this feeling of comfort and well-being for his tenants. The whole flat is designed to enhance good areas – the room with the best energy is the bedroom – and overcome afflictions and shortcomings by applying the right remedies. Now everybody entering the home immediate feels the harmonious atmosphere reigning the whole flat and wants to stay there. The tenants give testimonies as ” absolute relaxing” up to “the recharging and even healing energy made our weeks here very pleasant and unforgettable ones!”

The bedroom had the best energy, so to spend most of the time here many possibilities were given: of course the bed, then a divan with a reading lamp beside, a writing table and a hammock for relaxation. The earthy colours add to the calming and grounded ambience. According to Feng Shui no mirror or TV should be situated here as this will disturb the sound sleep.

A solid wall behind the bed is giving support and security. Nearly all walls have windows; therefore the bed stands diagonally to have at least some solid wall behind. The niches over the windows were too small for a storage, but too high to use them as a shelf. If they were left open, they would have sucked the energy. We converted them to lightings covered with drapings, which give a soft all over light to the room. A special nightlight was created in the corner behind the bed-head, which appears like 1000 stars behind the cloth.

The divan serves for comfortable reading and as a daybed.

The writing table doesn’t take much place, but gives enough space for computer-work and utilizes the corner well. The hammock unusually hung inside the house is the main attraction of the room and the most used spot of all tenants.

The kitchen and dining area is separated from the livingroom by an open shelf, which give free view through the shelf-boards, but acts as a distinct partition. As per Feng Shui all sharp corners and edges should be rounded, not to send sharp energy, so called “Poison Arrows” to the inhabitants; therefore all horizontal edges were additionally covered with half round patties and the shelf-boards end in a half round shape.

The gas-stove stood right beside the sink, which means in Feng Shui a clash of the water-element (sink) with the fire-element (gas-stove). The kitchen island was build to separate these elements and create an additional work- and cooking space and provides simultaneously a dining corner for 2 persons. The island was build with glass-bricks to avoid the impression of a heavy block in the middle of the kitchen. Now the platform easily floats on the glass construction and can be lit from inside, which give an inspiring light impression. In order to balance yin and yang the niches under the main platforms were covered with soft falling curtains instead of sharp lined shutters, which serve the same purpose to hide all crockery in the shelves under the platforms.

From the dining area you have an overview of the whole livingroom due to the open shelves. Transparency yet separation.

The dining table can be easily dismantled and assembled, as it consists of 2 shelves and a table top. In normal use the shelves are standing against the wall and give ample space to the dining area. The table can be build up when there is the need of more dining places; otherwise all meal can be taken on the counter of the kitchen island.

The eye-catcher in the livingroom are the two unusual shaped podests, which were positioned in areas without afflictions. The livingroom was one of the biggest challenges according to Feng Shui, but now all the seating arrangements are located in “safe” places. The colours also have been chosen according to the Feng Shui calculations. The cushions and bolsters invite to snug into the soft seatings and relax.

The podests provide additional store room, either as shelves for books or knick-knacks or as big drawers for items that need dust-protection. The door of the guest bathroom disappears behind a curtain which continuous in a kind of canopy over the quarter-circled podest.

The shelf under the window for the TV to come was build in the same manner as the partition to give a continuum to the design. We worked with a lot of different lighting possibilities: a wall washer, indirect light on top of the partition shelf, indirect light under the rim of the podests and for a full illumination an extraordinary light installation with starlights and bamboos has been attached on the wall, which simultaneously acts as a Feng Shui remedy.

The special curtain arrangement consists of separate sheer panels, which can be glided in 4 different layers over each other to either provide a translucent look during the day or an opaque shelter from outsiders glances. The blue curtain continuous from the window over the main door down to the floor and provides a privacy-screen against an immediately survey over the whole livingroom.

Toilets are considered as energy drains as all the good energy of the house can be flushed away. Therefore it is important to have the bathroom door always shut and the toilet lid closed! In the master-bathroom the toilet was seen from the bed; a glass-brick wall was erected to hide the commode behind, it also acts as a partition of the dry and wet zone. The ugly geyser with all water and electrical lines was relocated on the attic on top of the bathroom and gives now a clutter-free look. The remedy for the bathroom in the East is the fire-element, for that reason a lot of red accessories were placed like red towels, carpet and the red poppy flowers.

The window was closed with a fixed glass and accommodates now an additional shelf for all necessary washing utensils. The design of the quarter circle wash-basin is continued by the shelf-boards in the same shape. (As mentioned above the door should be always closed and was kept open only for the photo-shooting.)

The young lady shifting in the empty flat wanted to have a spacious looking place in a small 1 BHK. She wished to have a good Feng Shui in her new realm without make it looking like a Chinese museum with all the Feng Shui symbols standing around. Therefore we mostly worked with colours and the elements related with the directions to enhance good areas and to remedy afflictions. Beside the unobstructed space she ask for a “feminine” look. This we implement with a lot of drapings on the ceiling and the walls and a canopy over the bed, which all simultaneously hid unconcealed electrical lines behind the drapings.

The German company Dr. Oetker rented a fully open office-space of ca.880 sqft in Mumbai. All partitions had to be designed to meet the demand of working places and according to Feng Shui. The company wanted to implement Feng Shui for their success in business, but it “should not be seen”. There are certain ways to fulfil those wishes by using colours, material, decorations and set-up the different areas for different purposes (CEO, sales manager, executives, receptionist) to include Feng Shui into the environment, which are not obviously been noticed as such. Following the principles of Feng Shui mostly rounded or curved walls were used and harmful sharp edges (the only straight galss-brick wall in the CEO office) were disarmed by plants or other remedies.

Reception area: In order to distribute the light equally in the whole office glass brick-partitions instead of solid walls were build.

This client, himself a Sufi-Yoga-Master, wanted this hall, which was formerly used for storage of a restaurant, converted to his Yogahall. As he derives from the Sufi lineage, he wanted this hall designed in Sufi style. Domes are one of the favourite shapes in Sufism, so they should be included as the main theme of the hall.

From his former restaurant he brought oriental accessories (hanging lamps and oil lamps) which he collected from all over India to be implemented in the design.

Two big dome niches in the back wall and smaller diamond shaped and square sized niches at both sides have been built in the walls. Together with the metallic copper-colour it demarks this area as the focal point of the hall. From here the yoga-master will demonstrate for his classes.

The left side of the hall shows the dome shapes in form of paintings with different yoga postures.

The Chinese science of Feng Shui is mostly known in the context of houses, flats or gardens, but it is as well applicable to small areas like rooms or even smaller on your writing table!
The only thing you need is a good compass, a boy-scout compass which is available in every stationary will do.
Place the compass on your writing table and adjust the red half of the needle over the North, then you can read all directions, which are needed. BUT: don’t take the measurement directly beside your computer, telephone or other big metal objects, as the metal can distort the reading of the compass! Once know the directions, you can start to enhance your recognition, promotion or career.
It’s a good idea to place good fortune symbols to energize your desk, place them according to the compass sectors/directions.
To activate your recognition place a bright light in the South corner. This will ensure, that you will get noticed by a person of influence who can help you.
To enhance the growth and ensure the steady and positive development of you career put fresh flowers or a lucky bamboo on your desk in the East, South-East or South. It stimulates the wood element, which stands for growth. Replace the flowers, when they start to wither, otherwise you cause to opposite effect.
Arrange you table in the way that the computer, telephone and calculator – all metal elements – are posted in the West or North-West. When these directions are successfully energized, you will receive favourable attention from your boss.
Try to change only some details at a time and watch what is happening the next few days or weeks, some changes need more time, some less.
Good luck!

Is it esoteric Hocus-Pocus or can it really improve my current situation?

Have you ever noticed when you cross the threshold of an old house you somehow feel uncomfortable and don’t know why? Or you enter a room, where an argument just happened; you literally can feel “the air is so thick that you can cut it with a knife”? These are the energies still stuck in the atmosphere or the impacts of all the previous occupants imprinted in the walls, ceilings, floors or furniture, which are accumulating especially in the corners and nooks.
Every house or flat has its own history (family tragedies, death, fights, divorces) which is captured “in the memory” of the walls and still residing there as “stucked energies”. But also in some new houses the inhabitants still don’t feel comfortable and secure to live in there.
